Funyuns are an American import that never quite naturalised in Britain. Onion-flavoured rings, puffed and crunchy, with intense artificial onion seasoning that bears no relationship to actual onions but complete commitment to onion concept.

The flavour is aggressive. Onion powder turned up to maximum, coating every surface of every ring. It’s not subtle. It’s not trying to be subtle. Funyuns exist for people who want onion flavour without onion reality.

The ring shape provides satisfying crunch and finger-food convenience. The format works. The flavour is polarising but consistent. You know exactly what you’re getting with Funyuns, and you’re either into it or you’re not.

American snack culture

Funyuns represent a certain American approach to snacking: more is more, artificial is fine, intensity beats subtlety. In Britain, this approach has niche rather than mainstream appeal. But the niche exists and Funyuns serve it.

For onion extremists only.
