Some snacks want to be crisps. Bugles at least know they’re something else. These trumpet-shaped corn cones are unapologetically weird—crunchy, airy, angular little vessels built for shovelling into your mouth by the fistful.
At first bite, there’s a surprisingly mellow sweetness—like the kind you get from a sticky barbecue glaze that’s been left to caramelise. Then comes a smoky warmth: not too spicy, not too artificial. The flavour isn’t exactly layered—it’s more like a smoky syrupy wave that washes over and lingers just long enough to keep you reaching back in.
Texture-wise, Bugles are all about the crunch. It’s less crisp than you would like, more shell—rigid, with a slightly powdery bite. They kind of feel like something you may find on a beach that you’re not sure if it’s a fossil or a something left form a picnic covered in sand.
Are they authentically “southern”? Not particularly. But they’re more successful than many BBQ attempts, avoiding the dreaded cloying sweetness that plagues so many other snacks in this category.
These aren’t something you nibble slowly with a sandwich—they’re a solo mission. A bag disappears fast, and leaves you with dusty fingers and a slightly raised heart rate. But if you’re after a bold, nostalgic crunch that’s equal parts sweet, smoky and silly, these hit the spot.
PS. Bonus points if you’re the kind of person who puts them on your fingers like claws before eating (we’ve all done it).
