Golden Wonder: Beef & Onion

Golden Wonder: Beef & Onion

Beef and onion crisps exist purely because multipacks need variety. Nobody’s first choice, everyone’s acceptable backup. Golden Wonder’s version embraces this secondary status with what I can only describe as dignified resignation.

The beef is that familiar yeasty, Bovril-adjacent meatiness that British crisp makers have been using since crisps were invented. It’s not trying to taste like actual beef. It’s trying to taste like beef crisps, which is a different and entirely valid ambition.

The onion adds sweetness and prevents the beef from becoming monotonous. It’s doing important work despite receiving second billing.

The multipack position

In any meaty variety pack, these are eaten third. After smoky bacon, after roast chicken, before whatever weird flavour the manufacturer included to seem interesting. That’s their destiny. That’s their purpose.

They fulfil it honourably.
