Beef and onion is nobody’s favourite crisp flavour. It exists in multipacks as variety, consumed when better options are gone, tolerated rather than celebrated.

M&S cannot change this fundamental reality, but they can make better beef and onion crisps than most. And they do.

The beef is savoury and reasonably meaty, with more depth than budget versions achieve. The onion adds sweetness and prevents monotony. The combination is competent without being exciting.

On a decent crisp base, with M&S quality standards applied, these are fine. That’s the highest praise beef and onion typically receives. Fine. Acceptable. Present.

If you’re buying M&S multipacks and this flavour appears, you’ll eat it without complaint. You won’t seek it out individually. Nobody does. Nobody ever will.

The eternal also-ran, elevated slightly by better execution.
