M&S: Extreme Ridge Salt and Double Vinegar Potato Crisps

M&S: Extreme Ridge Salt and Double Vinegar Potato Crisps

Extreme. The least extreme hard rock band of the 90s. My sister was a huge fan, although I think that was more down to having a crush on the guitarist Nuno Bettencourt.

Extreme Ridge. The least extreme crisp, from a supermarket that would think having not having your shirt tucked into your chino shorts makes you edgy.

First impressions

Well these were the last of the three crisps reviewed in this session, so expectations had already been well lowever.

Of the three, these did seem to be the most appetising. A nice variation in colour across them suggesting some level of hand-cooked-ness. The odd seared edge.

Like the others however, the thickness didn’t lend itself to the hard crunch you would expect, more of a crumble. And the first note is slightly processed, as if these were reconstituted potato rather than the real thing.

Extreme tasting

Double vinegar?

I actually hadn’t spotted the double in the name until it was pointed out to me. And it just about merits it, the best thing about these was in fact the dominant sharp/sour note of vinegar.

I wouldn’t say its the strongest vinegar flavour I’ve encountered, maybe you could call them 1.25x Vinegar, but it was at least an attempt at extremity.

The verdict

There could have been a little more salt to balance this (although they do check out with 3x the salt of other packs), but there was just about enough to make them the one pack that was worth going back to.

Overall, these really didn’t live up to expectations, but they weren’t as dismal a failure as their spud cousins.
