M&S tortilla chips have always felt like they’re trying to be the sophisticated cousin of the corn chip family. These lightly salted ones position themselves as the refined option—but do they deliver on that promise?

A proper corn chip

The first thing you notice is the satisfying snap when you bite down—these have a proper crunch that doesn’t immediately disintegrate into powder.

The corn flavour comes through clearly, which is often lost the Dorito kingdom and other heavily seasoned varieties.

The “lightly salted” descriptor is accurate; there’s just enough salt to enhance the natural corn taste without overwhelming it, and that’s how I like my tortillas, as a chance to taste the corn itself.

The texture holds up well to dipping, though eaten alone they can feel a bit austere. They’re thick enough to support a decent dollop of salsa or guacamole without snapping, which for many I guess may be their primary function.

Competency as a virtue

These are competently made tortilla chips that do exactly what they say on the packet—no more, no less.

They’re the tortilla chip equivalent of a Ford Mondeo: functional, well-built, safe, but unlikely to set pulses racing.

But in the world of tortillas, I think that’s just right… If you need tortilla chips for your own Mexican feast, these’ll do the job without embarrassing you.
