A long time ago, in the early 90s, I was a child at a mildly oppressive Catholic boys school. And my abiding memory of these crisps is that anyone eating them would then thrust their fingers under your nose, suggesting that the funky-crustacean odour was reminiscent of … well just use your imagination what 12-year old boys are like.
What a start to a review that is…
Well, Nik Naks take the classic seaside favourite and turn it into a bag of crunchy, punchy corn snacks. The texture is exactly what you’d want from a Nik Nak nugget: light, crunchy, and perfectly irregular, with that satisfying snap.
The flavour isn’t shy. There’s a noticeable umami undertone reminiscent of scampi, but it’s heavily smacked around by a fresh lemon zing. It’s possibly a little too much, but I’m nostalgically challenged and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
As with all Nik Naks, the seasoning is generously applied, you can see flecks of the zesty powder clinging to every ridge.
If you’re a fan of bold, slightly tangy, and unmistakably snackable crisps, Scampi ‘N’ Lemon is a must-try. Just maybe keep a drink handy, because these have a way of disappearing quickly.
