There’s something quietly intriguing about Aldi’s Deltas range. It feels like the supermarket equivalent of putting on sunglasses indoors — trying to be cool without saying so out loud. The name itself — Deltas Cool — sounds like a translation that’s one step to the left of familiar, but you know exactly what it’s going for.
These are Aldi’s answer to Doritos Cool Original. And to their credit, they get surprisingly close.
Familiar crunch, distinctive accent
The first thing that strikes you about the Deltas Cool chips is their texture. They’re lighter and crispier than you might expect — not quite as thick or toothsome as name-brand tortilla chips, but with a satisfying snap nonetheless. There’s no over-oiling, no odd graininess. Just a clean, toasted crunch that feels balanced and easy to snack on.
Flavour-wise, they’re doing their best impression of that elusive “Cool” profile — a vaguely creamy, tangy, slightly oniony seasoning that doesn’t really exist in the natural world, but somehow works. It’s nostalgic. Reminds me of cinema snacks or the kind of party bowls you hover around longer than you meant to. Aldi’s take is slightly sweeter and less bold than the original, and the seasoning’s a bit patchy bag to bag — but when it lands, it lands.
Cool by design, not by accident
Visually, the Deltas Cool chips look the part. Triangular, lightly dusted, pale golden with just enough speckled seasoning to suggest they’ve been through some sort of flavour journey. They’re less aggressively orange than Doritos, which might disappoint some, but also makes them feel a little more natural — or at least less fluorescent.
They pair well with dips — particularly sour cream or guac — and work nicely on their own. But they’re not the kind of tortilla chip that transforms the snacking experience. They’re more of a solid stand-in, a quiet nod to a branded experience at a fraction of the price.
A smart swap — with a few caveats
As is often the case with Aldi snacks, Deltas Cool isn’t about reinvention. It’s about approximation with purpose — offering something comfortingly close to the big names without the branding. And on that front, these chips deliver. They’re not a revelation, but they’re reliable, good value, and do what they set out to do.
If you go in expecting Doritos, you’ll notice the difference. If you go in expecting Aldi’s version of Doritos, you might be pleasantly surprised.
