Cool tortilla chips exist because Doritos Cool Original exists. Let’s not pretend otherwise. This is supermarket own-brand shadowing of a dominant product, triangular chip for triangular chip.
That said, the shadowing is competent.
The tangy, creamy flavour profile is present and correct. That distinctive “cool” taste that isn’t quite sour cream and isn’t quite anything else. It’s its own thing, familiar from decades of Doritos dominance.
The tortilla base
The chip itself is sturdy and well-made, with good corn flavour and appropriate crunch. It holds up to dipping without disintegrating, which is the minimum requirement for tortilla chips.
The thickness is right. The snap is satisfying.
Seasoning coverage
Here’s where Asda falls short of Doritos. The flavouring coverage is inconsistent. Some chips are well-coated, others are practically plain. That variation means some bites are tangy and others are just corn.
Doritos has better quality control. You’re partly paying for consistency.
The value calculation
These are significantly cheaper than Doritos. If you’re buying for a party, where the chips will mostly be vehicles for salsa anyway, the saving makes sense. For solo snacking where the cool flavour matters more, the inconsistency is more annoying.
Acceptable alternative
Not as good as the original. Good enough for most purposes.
