Let’s address the elephant in the room: Chilli Heatwave isn’t that hot.

There. I’ve said it. The name promises meteorological catastrophe. The reality is a mild Tuesday in September. If you eat actually spicy food with any regularity, these will register as “has some flavour” rather than “heatwave.”

But here’s the thing: that’s fine. That’s correct, even. Doritos is a mainstream brand selling to mainstream consumers, most of whom think Nando’s medium is adventurous. Calibrating Chilli Heatwave for mass appeal rather than chilli-head credibility is smart business.

And the flavour underneath the modest heat is genuinely good. There’s depth here. Paprika warmth, slight sweetness, the familiar Doritos tang. It’s not just “hot.” It’s flavoured and hot. The distinction matters.

I eat a bag of these and feel satisfied. Not challenged, not impressed by the heat, but satisfied. The craving gets scratched. The mouth gets mildly warmed. The job gets done.

For actual heat, look elsewhere. For a reliably enjoyable spiced tortilla chip that won’t frighten your nan, Chilli Heatwave delivers exactly what most people actually want.
