Rough Cuts is Golden Wonder attempting to compete in the premium crisp market. Thicker cut, bolder flavours, positioning that says “we can do hand cooked too.” Bang Bang Spicy Thai is their most ambitious expression of this ambition.
And it’s genuinely good.
The Thai flavour profile is well-developed: lemongrass, lime, chilli heat, a hint of peanut sweetness in the background. It’s not authentically Thai in the way Thai food is Thai, but it’s convincingly Thai-inspired in the way that British interpretations manage.
The texture is the revelation. These are substantially thicker than standard Golden Wonder, with a crunch that approaches Kettle Chips territory. The rough cut surface holds more flavouring, delivering more intense taste per crisp.
Brand evolution
This is Golden Wonder acknowledging that the crisp market has moved on. You can’t survive purely on nostalgia and value positioning. You need products that compete with current expectations.
Rough Cuts shows they can do it. Whether the market cares is another question.
A premium product from a brand fighting for relevance.
