Has there ever been a crisp that has actually nailed prawn flavour? So many attempts are based on a weird blend of paprika or ketchup tang – essentially covering half of the flavours in a prawn cocktail without trying to approach the prawn itself.
But at least they label themselves as prawn cocktail. These Sizzling King Prawn crisps have no such place to hide.
The crunch? Fantastic, McCoys have always managed to solid and thick crunch that feels exceptionally manly. I can’t say I’d picture these on the dashboard of a white van alongside a copy of The Sun.
But the flavour is exceptionally odd. Just ketchup meets barbecue sauce with a hint of spice. And quite harsh too, no mellow sweet tones that I’d associate with prawn.
So we end up with a good crisp, doused is something that assumes:
Sizzling = BBQ
King = Manly and punchy
Prawn = Ketchup.
McCoys, please try harder. Or just don’t veer into flavours you can’t handle.
