Popchips are the diet crisp that convinced people diet crisps could taste like real crisps. They can’t, quite. But Popchips comes closer than most attempts.

The popping process creates different texture from frying. Lighter, crunchier in a different way, with air pockets that create irregular mouthfeel. It’s not worse than fried crisps. It’s different from fried crisps. That difference takes adjustment.

Sea Salt is the purest test of this format. No bold flavouring to mask the textural novelty. Just salt and the popped potato base, exposed for judgment.

The judgment is cautiously positive. These taste reasonably of potato. They’re appropriately salted. They satisfy a crisp craving without the guilt that marketing suggests you should feel about regular crisps.

The health question

Are these actually healthier? Somewhat. Less fat. Fewer calories. The difference isn’t transformative, but it exists.

For guilt-reduction more than actual health improvement.
