Cheese and onion is the one Seabrook flavour I’ll partially defend. Not because it’s good, but because it’s less bad than the alternatives. Cheese and onion is such a robust, forgiving flavour that even Seabrook can’t entirely ruin it.
The cheese is tangy. The onion is present. The orange dust clings to the crinkle cut ridges and delivers flavour with each bite. The basic mechanics work. That’s more than I can say for some of their range.
But “the basic mechanics work” is a low bar for Britain’s most popular crisp flavour. Walkers does this better. Golden Wonder does this better. Supermarket own-brands frequently do this better. Seabrook’s cheese and onion is acceptable in a market overflowing with good options.
The value calculation
Seabrook is cheap. This is their competitive advantage, possibly their only one. If you’re buying crisps for a children’s party where quantity matters more than quality, the economics make sense. If you’re buying crisps because you want to enjoy eating crisps, the savings aren’t worth the compromise.
Acceptable. That’s as generous as I can be.
