The word “mature” is working hard here. Standard cheese and onion uses generic cheese flavouring. Mature cheddar implies depth, sharpness, the complexity that comes from actual ageing. Tesco’s Finest needs to deliver on this implicit promise.
It mostly does.
There’s a sharpness here that regular cheese and onion lacks. More tang, more bite, a cheese flavour that approaches the character of actual mature cheddar rather than just “cheese.” The onion supports without competing, providing sweetness and depth.
The hand cooked base is excellent, as Finest products consistently are. Substantial crunch, good potato flavour, the premium texture that justifies the premium price. Everything works together.
The competition
Kettle’s Mature Cheddar & Red Onion is the benchmark in this category. Tesco’s Finest is close. Not quite as complex, not quite as refined, but close enough that the price difference makes them worth considering.
Cheese and onion for adults. Properly executed.
